Abstract : Second-year nursing college students are at an important stage with increased expertise after 1 year of college life. Therefore, this study aimed to examine methods of supporting second-year nursing college students with regard to current issues identified from students’ reflections regarding their first year. The content of these first-year reflections was coded based on the context. Further, it was subcategorized on the basis of similarities and characteristics of the semantic content; the content was further abstracted to create categories. A total of eight categories were ultimately formed. Second-year nursing college students required the following supports: (1) support for daily learning methods including preparation and review, (2) support for acquiring nursing skills for increased expertise, (3) support for concerns arising from various life experiences and for encouraging growth, and (4) support for acknowledging a sense of accomplishment during the first year and accomplishing personal goals, such that no students are lost because they could not bridge the gap between the first- and second-year education. Considering these issues, basic professional skills require to be continuously developed on the basis of the fundamental academic skills and expertise acquired during the first and second year.
