In this short essay on her last novel, I posit that 'darkness' is the leading theme. Here, darkness is closely related to remorse, where 'remorse' is the main concept Heidegger's philosophy. This navel raises the question what might be the darkest, the most profound problem to us. Murdoch plays with the possibihties for solving this problem. This novel tells us how we go through life transitions through examining our own 'darkness'.
