| 内容記述 | It is known that the third person singular pronoun he is used traditionally for indeterminate gender reference, b ut researc hes show that native speakers of English do not feel this usage is really generic, because the masculine image of he. In recent years,they or he or she have been used as the third person singular pronouns instead of he. In Japan, many grammar books of English as a foreign language still say that he is the correct form for sex-neutral references, however it is not certain whether Japanese learners of English have the women-included image ⅲ the generic he. This survey tries to make clear the gender image of generic he and the third person plural pronoun they among Japanese learners and consider the probability of singular they will come into use in Japan. |
