| 内容記述 | 【Abstract】 Paradise, published in 1998, is Toni Morison's first masterpiece after she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. In the story, we find many characters as well as many different themes. It may be difficult to comprehend but worthwhile reading it. Morrison, in this work, develops a story centering on the hiistory. During the late Reconstruction, plenty of all-black towns were founded in the West by former slaves who came from the South. The story is about an all-black town ruled by Deacon and also about a nearby convent settled by consolata and four other women fled from betrayal, drug addict, abusive husbands, lovers, etc. Morrison's fictional town Ruby in Oklahoma was to be Gold's Promised Land, Paradise. Living up to their tradition and rules, the people were safe and happy. The outside of the world keeps changing. Of course things in Ruby cannot stay the same. The residents in the town do not face the fact as it is, and look outward for a cause and find it in the convent. They need the scapegoat to reestablish the utopian community. July 1976, nine men attack the convent where the women are living on the edge of the town. I wonder if they can gain Paradise once again. Ruby can not be Paradise any more as we see the following paper. |
