| 内容記述 | 【Abstract】 Tar Baby (1981), written by Toni Morrison, is her fourth work, which deals with serious problems and conflicts in the deep consciosness of the black people. Morrison is said to have grasped a hint or suggestion from the folktale called Tar Baby. This is well-known as a love story but I am sure it tells us something more than that. The story is complicated. We can take out two major themes: one is a child abuse and the other is the tar baby. This paper refers to their differences in a view to be involved. The characters, Valerian and Margaret, lived in the worst environment when they were young. They have been married for thirty years, often gurarreling each other so that they could not get along well. Their marriage life was empty. This is why Margaret abuses her own child. The tar baby, Jadine, is an intelligent black girl. She falls in love with Son, Who exists in deep heart of the Black but later is to be absorbed into the society of the white people. She happens to be unable to throw away her own money., degree, and prestige, etc. Eventually the couple's love did not work out. Why? The answer will be found in the following paper. |
