| 内容記述 | Joyce Carol Oates's main theme for her fiction is the difficulty of living in America especially as a woman. Her dexterity in describing the vanguard life of modern American women excite her reader's interests and curiousity. This paper maintains that the most typical novel of this kind, Unholy Loves, is a story of the heroine Brigit's growth, not a satire of campus politics of academic world as it is generally reviewed. In spite of the highest degree of physical freedom and independence that she has attained, establishing her self identity and autonomy is hampered by psychological dependence men's ideas of women. In the end, she finds solution to her inner problems which brings not such a great outward change, but a forceful inner renewal, This renewal shows at the same time the limitation and potentiality of American ideal of freedom for women. | |||||||||||||

| 内容記述 | ジョイス・キャロル・オーツは自伝的にアメリカにおける女性の先端的な生き方を描く時に筆の冴えを見せ, 読者の興味をそそる。Unholy Lovesはその良い例である。この作品は大学社会におけるキャンパスポリチック自体を諷刺的に描くことが主題のように見えるが, この論文ではこの物語を主人公ブリジットの成長物語として読む。物理的には最高に自由で自立しているように見える彼女であるが, 内面的には男性から見た女性観に束縛され, 自己解放できないでいる。物語の最後に夫と恋人と別れ, 自己を確立するが, これは回りの物理的な変化というより, せいぜい自己変革にのみによって得ることができたものである。この自己変革を達成するのは女性の地位が一番進んでいるとされるアメリカにおいても難しい。しかし, ブリジットの変革は例え形に表れない程小さな変化であったかもしれないが, 自己を内面から変革するという力強い変化であった。これがたかだが最先進国における女性の自由の限度なのかもしれない。 | |||||||||||||
