| 内容記述 | Jazz (1992), written by Toni Morrison, is her sixth experimental and keenly enthusiastic work. The characters are depicted in their own way through jazz music is. Joe, Violet and Dorcans, main characters, are living in chaos which is the worst environment of home. Joe and Violet find an escape from the darkness in the process of Dorcas' new life. Fifty-years-old Joe falls in love with the eighteen-year-old Dorcas, but he does not know when to quit as well as how to love. Later on he ends to be out of his control and eventually shoots his lover to death. Many years' struggles and troubles lead him to emerge from the darkness and to see the sun. He also finds himself : to be an old colored man. So does his wife, Violet, who is three years younger than her husband. Anybody is not obliged to feel sorry for her, nor fights with her. Some may favor her and can count on her. After all, Joe moves his head right or left to the jazz rhythm while his wife snaps her fingers in the melody and both of them begin to dance together. The Work Jazz, may be difficult for readers to follow and understand, but it is the one which was written by the born storyteller, Toni Morison. |
